Utilities Continue to Pursue Anti-Competition Legislation in Wisconsin

Wisconsin was once known for some of the lowest electric rates in the nation. Now, Wisconsin has the 2nd highest in the Midwest and some of the highest in the country. Since 2019, utilities have been awarded over $1.5 BILLION in utility rate hikes, with $260 MILLION in 2024 alone, approved by the Public Service Commission.

But that's not all. For two consecutive legislative sessions, utility companies have used their influence to push elected officials to support ROFR legislation, which eliminates competitive bidding for new utility line projects.

Why does this matter? It's straightforward. You may have noticed an effort to increase energy production from renewable sources. Power generated from large wind and solar projects in rural areas must be transported to population centers. This requires the approval of hundreds of billions of dollars’ worth of utility line projects in the next few years, with a significant portion allocated to Wisconsin.

By eliminating the competitive bidding process, we lose the benefits of the free market. There's no incentive to include cost caps or adhere to project schedules. This results in higher project costs and subsequently higher utility bills for businesses and families across Wisconsin.

At present, Wisconsin families and businesses cannot afford this proposal. Despite previous setbacks, utilities remain determined. With billions in profits at stake, utility lobbyists have already declared it a priority for the next legislative session.
